Sanctity of Life Sunday

On January 22, President Biden celebrated the right to abortion and what would have been the 50th anniversary of Roe v. Wade. He proclaimed,  “NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOSEPH R. BIDEN JR., President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim January 22, 2023, as the 50th Anniversary of the Roe v. Wade Decision.” He continued, “I call upon Americans to honor generations of advocates who have fought for reproductive freedom, to recognize the countless women whose lives and futures have been saved and shaped by the Roe v. Wade decision, and to march forward with purpose as we work together to restore the right to choose.” In addition, in a speech made by Vice-President Harris in Florida, also on January 22, also celebrating the 50th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, she said, “A promise we made in the Declaration of Independence that we are each endowed with the right to liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” She left out the “right to life” and the Creator who endowed us with these rights, so clearly stated in our Declaration. These are both unfortunate and awful statements by our nation’s highest leaders. Both the President and Vice-President are misguided and wrong in their thinking.

We celebrate life as it begins at fertilization and conception in a mother’s womb. January 22 was Sanctity of Life Sunday and we rightly celebrate the overturning of Roe v. Wade. We celebrate the gift of life God gives to a husband and wife. That baby has its own unique DNA. It has a heartbeat at 5 or 6 weeks of life. If we found this creature on Mars, we’d say we found life on another planet – this is a life inside the mother’s womb. A widely used and leading embryology textbook by Keith Moore and T. V. N. Persaud, used to teach medical students, states, “Human development begins at fertilization when a male gamete or sperm (spermatozoon) unites with a female gamete or oocyte (ovum) to form a single cell—a zygote. This highly specialized, totipotent cell marked the beginning of each of us as a unique individual.” There is no valid, acceptable reason for abortion. Abortion is the killing of a baby.

The science of embryology does not contradict the Bible. That baby in the mother’s womb is formed and being formed by God. We are not surprised, because Psalm 139:13 says, “For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb.” The next verse says that the baby is made for God’s praise: “I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.” God is watching that baby in the womb, as the next verses say, “My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance.” God formed that baby for His purposes, “In your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.”

I pray for the President and Vice-President to have right thinking about God, His creation and gift of life, and abortion. I pray they will realize the error of their ways and repent of their sin. I pray our country will celebrate every life because every life matters, all lives matter, especially the lives of babies who will be born. Roe v. Wade was an immoral and poor law and deserved to be overturned. May God have mercy on our country and leaders.
