many blessings

Maybe life is going really great for you these days – praise God! Maybe it’s a harder season for you, a rough patch, life is more overwhelming and dark. I want to remind you of the many blessings you have from God, in Christ, through His Spirit.

Paul writes to the Ephesians in chapter 1, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places.” You in Christ have been blessed, not just with a few or some spiritual blessings, but every spiritual blessing, and every possible spiritual blessing; that’s a lot of blessings! What are these spiritual blessings, in the heavenly places? It is every blessing that God can give to you through His Spirit. It involves every aspect of grace that you experience as a believer and follower of Jesus.

As Paul continues, we learn that these spiritual blessings in the heavenly places are made possible by Christ’s death, resurrection, ascension, and sending of the Holy Spirit. It involves God’s love and choosing in v. 4, “even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world.” It involves our holiness and blamelessness and no condemnation, forgiven of all our sins. It involves, “our adoption to Himself as sons, and He has purposed this for His will” in v. 5; your life has purpose and meaning, in Him and through Him and for Him. This is to “the praise of His glorious grace, with which He has blessed us in the Beloved (v. 6).”

The spiritual blessings in heavenly places continue: “In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace (v. 7).” He has lavished and poured out richly all these blessings upon you. And we are united to Him as His people, and He is our God. And, “in him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will, so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory (vv. 11-12).” Finally, we were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it (vv. 13-14). Amen.

All of these spiritual blessings are yours and found in Christ. Are you depending and trusting in Him today, whether life is great or more of a struggle? You won’t find any solid or everlasting joy, peace, or happiness outside of Him. He is your greatest treasure. He alone is your greatest source of blessings.
