They say attention spans are only a few seconds these days. If you’re still reading this article, amen! If you make it to the end, God bless you! We have so many options: channels to watch, the web to surf, podcasts to listen to. I think Dorothy would say today, “Clicks and subscribing and likes, oh my!” Consider your focus and attention to Jesus this season.
The author of Hebrews warns in Hebrews 2:1, “Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it.” He continues in v. 3, “We must not neglect such a great salvation.” The Jewish followers of Jesus in that day had seen and heard a powerful message that came from God Himself, the angels, His Word, creation, the teaching of the apostles, and signs and wonders. It was all reliable and true. God is not a silent God. He wants to be heard and known. He is alive and communicates, and His message is clear for anyone who will see and listen. Are you paying attention? Don’t drift away. Don’t neglect who He is and what He says to you today.
What is this message? A great salvation. The author continues in Hebrews 2:14–17, “Jesus Himself partook of the same things as us, that through death He might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery. He had to be made like His brothers in every respect, so that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation (payment) for the sins of the people.” This plan of salvation comes from God and is initiated by God. He sent His one and only Son, that all who would believe in Him would not perish, but have everlasting life. Every person sins and rebels against God, breaking His law, and deserves death, punishment, wrath, and hell, but in His grace and mercy, He forgives us through Christ’s death and resurrection. There is no greater news to hear and no greater place to be than “forgiven” in the eyes of God. This is a great salvation! Are you saved today?
I hope you made to the end and finished reading this. If you did, a few questions for you: What makes it difficult for you to hear God’s message today? What do you chase after that distracts you from hearing His word? How is today’s culture tempting you to cut corners, lose focus, or drift spiritually? Are you neglecting Him and the great salvation He’s given you? Do not drift. Do not neglect who God is and what He has done and said. Make every effort to know Him, grow closer to Him, and love Him deeply.
