education

The greatest person to know is God. There is no one greater, no greater treasure to have, and nothing more valuable than knowing God. God has the answer to all your questions: “Who am I? What is my purpose? Why do I exist?” Do you know this God today?

The God of the Bible is the God of education. He is the great educator. He has been educating from the beginning. He educated Adam and Eve in the garden, instructing them what to eat and not eat. When they sinned against Him, He loved them and He educated them as to what would come next. He taught Noah, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob concerning future promises of blessings and curses. He instructed Moses and gave the Ten Commandments. He taught the Israelites to teach their children diligently, to instruct them, “when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.” He taught about the building of the temple and the future Messiah and new covenant. Proverbs and wisdom literature are all about education and we are to fear the Lord and grow in wisdom and knowledge of Him. The New Testament writers were educators; they taught about Jesus. Jesus Himself taught with all authority, not like anyone else of His day. The Bible itself is for teaching, training, correcting, and rebuking, making us wise for salvation. We are to go and make disciples and teach them to obey His Word. God is all about teaching and education.

The purpose of teaching and education is to know, enjoy, and worship God. Education should form us, mature us, and grow us up into godliness. We learn in order to know Him better and to be better people. We are to steward creation, to be salt and light, to bring Christ to our nation and the nations, and promote human flourishing. We learn in order to advance the common good. There is nothing more important than knowing God, the one and only God of the Bible, through the atoning work of Christ on the cross. His death and resurrection, and the power and presence of His Spirit, are matters of first importance. Education is to reflect Him.

We integrate knowledge of Him with living life. Whether it’s science, math, economics, literature, the arts, history, or skills – the goal of education is glory to God alone, to know Him deeper, to walk with Him closer, and to be ready to meet Him on that day He returns. May we be receptive to His teaching today.
