You failed and derailed again. Messed up. Came up short. Went sideways. “A momentary lapse of reason.” You said the wrong thing, saw the wrong thing, supposed the wrong thing. Lost your temper and blew up. Lusted after pornography. You can ask yourself, “What was I thinking?” but the bottom line is, you weren’t. The desires of your flesh and the draws of this world were too much for you, and you succumbed. What will you do now?
What you did is sin. You disobeyed God, rebelled against God. You wanted to do it “my way,” which is not God’s way. You put yourself on the throne instead of God. You worshipped the creature and creation instead of the Creator. You missed the target and fell short of His glory. Like a dog, you returned to your vomit; like a pig, you returned to wallow in the mud (Prov 26:11). This is an affront to His goodness, perfection, kingship, and glory. It is treason against God, a criminal and capital offense that deserves punishment. You are judged and found guilty; is there any hope?
In Christ, because of Christ, you are forgiven all your sins. He who knew no sin became sin, so that in Him you may become the righteousness of God (2 Cor 5:21). The good news is that the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ is for all who believe. Even though you have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, you are justified by His grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus. God put Jesus forward as a payment by His blood, to be received by faith. If you believe that Jesus is who He is and did what He did, then you are justified (Rom 3:22-26). Your sins may be many, but His mercy is more. He gives amazing, wonderful, matchless grace, greater than all your sins. You can be forgiven and restored. There is therefore now no condemnation for you, in Christ (Rom 8:1). Never and forever.
Look at Peter. He lied three times about not knowing Christ (but he really did). When he was found out, he wept bitterly. He was ashamed and returned to his trade of fishing. “God will never take me back,” he thought. But Jesus confronted him three times and forgave him. He invited Peter once again, “Follow me.” Get back on your horse, Peter. You fell off your bike pretty hard, but here is grace and forgiveness. Let’s pick it up again. And this is what God says to you when you fail again for the trillionth time.
God’s nature is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin (Ex 34:6-7). Know this: His wrath is real and He will punish those who refuse Him and remain in their sin, but to all who receive Him, who believe in His name, He gave the right to become children of God (John 1:12). You have failed, but He has not. You are forgiven, through Christ.
