What will happen tomorrow? Yoda said, “Difficult to see; always in motion the future is.” It’s true, we don’t know exactly all the particulars of what’s going to happen tomorrow, next week, or even later today. But God is not adjusting or recalculating as time moves on; there are some events about the future we know will happen for sure.
Jesus died and rose from the dead, to pay the price for sins, for all those who believe in Him. He was taken up to glory in heaven, and today He sits at the Father’s right hand. And He will return. He is coming back. Until He returns, there will be many false prophets, and there will be wars and rumors of wars and famines and earthquakes and plagues. Lawlessness will increase and people will turn away from following Jesus. We shouldn’t be surprised; this is all in preparation for His return (Matthew 24:3-14).
And then He will return. Jesus said about Himself, “The Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father (Matthew 16:27).” He said again in Matthew 24:30-31, “There will appear in heaven the sign of the Son of Man, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And he will send out his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.” We can be encouraged. This is what we look forward to, in Christ.
Paul said in Colossians 3:4, “When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.” And he said in Philippians 3:20-21, “Our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself.” Finally, he said, “For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17).” Oh, what a glorious day it will be! Jesus is coming again!
Many Christians disagree over the timing and particulars of it all, and want to know when all of this will happen exactly. That is not the point. The point is He is coming back; are you ready? Stay alert and watch the news and be aware of what’s going on, and keep the bigger picture in view. We don’t need to hide under the covers or run around in a panic. We have confidence in Him. Fear not. Warn others. Come quickly, Lord Jesus.
