Who is God? Who is the Lord? Is He the “big man upstairs?” Is He your higher power? Is He Santa Claus? He is the God who saves.
David knew who God is. David knew who his God was. David spoke to the LORD the words of this song on the day when the LORD delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul. He said, “The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold and my refuge, my savior; you save me from violence. I call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised, and I am saved from my enemies (2 Sam 22:1-4).” That’s some God. That’s not a fake, two-bit, hack wanna-be, small “g” god. He is a rock, a fortress, a deliverer. He is a shield and the horn of salvation, a stronghold, a savior. And He is all those things to David: “my rock, my fortress, my deliverer, my God, my shield, the horn of my salvation, my stronghold, my refuge, my savior.” Do you get the point? Is He all those things to you?
The world doesn’t have this vision. The world is bottom-up and self-centered. The world is small and flat and shallow and empty. Things of this world don’t satisfy. The world drinks filthy water from leaky, broken glasses that hold no water, and when you take a drink, you’re still thirsty. The world is always eating but not satisfied; it is “always winter and never Christmas.” We believe in something bigger. We believe in someone bigger. When the waves of death surrounded David, when the snares of destruction confronted and attacked him, when his enemies assailed him, he called upon his Lord. And God heard and answered. And He hears and answers you. The Lord rescues. The Lord rewards. The Lord saves.
Do you know this God today? He shows Himself merciful. He is a lamp who lights your darkness. His way is perfect, and He proves Himself true. Call upon Him today, in times of trouble. Come to Him and lay your burdens down, and He will give you rest. “The LORD lives, and blessed be my rock, and exalted be my God, the rock of my salvation. Great salvation he brings to his king, and shows steadfast love to his anointed, to David and his offspring forever (2 Samuel 22:47, 51).” God shows His steadfast love to all who draw near to Him. That’s who God is. Is He your God?
